2. Desperate Housewives (2004 - 2012) - ABC
Marc Cherry’s pitch-perfect satire of suburban kitsch melodrama is one of the cleverest concoctions in recent television. Unfortunately, Desperate Housewives is revered and criticized for many poor reasons. My biggest issues with Housewives criticism are the show’s lack of realness, obscene plot-lines, Susan’s clumsiness, and the degradation of character effectiveness. First, the idea that the show needs to have characters to identify with is preposterous. Desperate Housewives is a utopia of suburban living maxed to the extreme; there shouldn’t be anything to relate to, as the show is all about great dishy fun. While some of the story lines are rather boring, I’m never actually bored. Housewives has an extraordinarily high ratio of good episodes to episode count - mostly due to Wisteria Lane’s leading ladies. The show’s production is virtually unmatched; the pastel-washed colors, the crisp editing, the always intentional cliches, and the proper writing all accumulate to create a much underrated serial satire. With a final season as fresh as its first, Housewives has had astounding longevity and stamina as a quality show. There are few shows as exceedingly pleasing, yet commonly misunderstood, as this one.
